International STEM day: Let's meet the women in STEM behind P.Happi

It’s international STEM day and we’re about what excites them about their field what advice they would give to someone who is interested in studying or working in STEM. Let’s find out a little more about their stories

First up our founder Dr Chiara Broad

What did you study?

PhD in Synthethic Biology, Imperial

Advanced Chemical Engineering MSc, Imperial

BSc Chemistry, ETH, Potsdam, UC Berkeley

What is your specialty?

I explored a lot of different directions. I like the industry link with Chemical Engineering but it was more engineering.

What excites you about your field?

I loved that there was still so much explore in bio and it allowed me to research solutions to improve health and help people. Theoretical chemistry was fun, but too fundamental for me. I did enjoy the lab and the practical parts, trying to make sense of things, exploring ideas, researching solutions to problems and trialling them in experiments.

What advice would you give to young girls who want to study or work in STEM?

I think it’s good to go after what excites you, as you will need to work hard. It’s so important to be inspired and curious about the subject. It can sometimes be difficult when things are not easy to understand or difficult e.g. when experiments fail but it teaches you patience and to be open with the subject. There is so much to explore within STEM and so many directions you can go so it’s good to maybe look into different fields and explore different research areas.

Naiomi Morris, Pharmacist

What did you study?

Pharmacy, Cardiff University

What do you do?

I am currently a locum pharmacist and my main areas of interest have been women’s health, gynaecology and paediatrics.

What excites you about your field?

What excites me most about being a hospital pharmacist is the constant evolution in treatment options. Also, I take pride in my interventions, which allow for safe administration and monitoring of medications, guiding patients toward better health.

As a pharmacy sales manager for P.happi®, what I find most enjoyable about my role is the innovation that our product provides for women’s health. I also enjoy meeting new people and building strong relationships!

What advice would you give to young girls who want to study or work in stem?

My advice would be to gain as much work experience as possible when you’re younger to get a feel for different roles within STEM. Set a goal, work hard, and remember that if you don’t succeed at first, try again! Persistence and experience are key to finding your path and achieving success.
