Cystitis: The Uninvited Guest at the Bladder Party

Cystitis: The Uninvited Guest at the Bladder Party

Today we're going to talk about a not-so-fun topic: cystitis.

So, what is cystitis exactly?

It refers to a urinary tract infection (UTI) that particularly affects the bladder, or lower urinary tract and causes inflammation. It can make you feel like you're constantly running to the bathroom, experiencing pain and discomfort while peeing, and generally feeling unwell and tired.

But why does cystitis happen?

Typically, cystitis is caused by bacteria entering the bladder from the bowel.  Women have a short urinary tract compared to men and common life situations can allow bacteria to travel into the bladder such as sexual intercourse which is a major trigger for many women for example.  Exercise is also an often talked about cause as additional moisture in the intimate area can allow said bacteria to thrive.  Not wiping front to back, eating spicy foods and an often overlooked habit of not peeing often enough to empty the bladder.

How do you get rid of cystitis from your bladder?

Here are some tips to help you show it the door:

  1. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! Drinking plenty of water helps flush out those unwelcome bacteria and keeps your bladder happy.

  2. Time to pee! Don't hold it in. Make sure to empty your bladder regularly and completely. Holding it in can give those bacteria a chance to throw an even wilder party in there.

  3. Skip the irritants. As tempting as that extra cup of coffee or that spicy burrito may be, try to avoid them when you're dealing with cystitis. Your bladder will thank you for it!

  4. Get cosy with a heating pad. Applying a warm compress to your lower abdomen can help soothe the discomfort and give you some much-needed relief.

  5. Time to call in the professionals. If the party-crasher won't leave no matter what you try, it's time to seek medical advice. Your doctor can help determine the best course of action and may prescribe some medication to kick cystitis to the curb once and for all!

  1. Alkalisers can help to reduce discomfort, Hiprex, a type of alkaliser can be bought in a pharmacy and can help to make the environment in your bladder less good for bacteria to grow. Alkalisers reduce acidity of your pee so it feels less like razor blades but remember for Hiprex to work, you need an acidic environment. You can test the pH of your pee with urine strips.

Remember, cystitis may be the visitor no one invited but there are solutions out there to support you through to a happier bladder. Stay hydrated, listen to your bladder's needs, and don't hesitate to seek help if needed.
